Congo: UN foods agency triples aid to strife-hit Ituri province
03.07.2019 14:11 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
As of last week, the WFP (UN World Food Programme) foods aid shipments to the troubled Ituri province (Congo) have boosted 3 times, in order to resond to the world second largest hunger crisis, after Yemen, UN Radio says referring to the WFP spokesperson Hervé Verhoosel recent report.
As to Verhoosel, now «people are dying of hunger, or, malnutrition is such that they are dying».
He added that although there is no accurate data on the total number of deaths from hunger within Ituri, 13 million people are food insecure nationally, including five million acutely malnourished children.
The situation has worsened because of the boost of clashes between Hema herders and Lendu farmers that have driven people from their homes, along with rising food prices; a lack of income and access to a varied diet; and crop damage due to insects; and disease epidemics.
