Human rights challenges: "no room for complacency"
23.12.2015 09:17 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
There is «absolutely no room for complacency» when it comes to addressing human rights challenges globally, UN Radio says referring to the
President of the UN Human Rights Council, Joachim Ruecker, report reflecting on the chambers work over the past year.
It is to be admitted, presently 47 countries serve on the Human Rights Council (which was established nearly a decade ago by the UN General Assembly).
The report covers situations in the countries which the UN Human Rights Council addressed within 2015 (the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea, Sri Lanka and Syria, countries which have been the subject of the Councils «steady focus» for the past four years).
Besides, the report’s thematic issues cover this year ranged from climate change to sustainable development, terrorism and migration.
The Council also established new mandates on the right to privacy in the digital age and on the rights of persons with Albinism.
Mr. Ruecker says the challenges to human rights today remain huge, adding that «there is absolutely no room for complacency.»
He admits past, present and future Council members have a decisive role to play in order to better protect human rights and to help victims of human rights abuses.
Looking ahead, Mr. Ruecker suggests that the Human Rights Council should be made a primary organ of the United Nations.
By doing so, he says the three pillars of the organization Peace and Security, Development and Human Rights would be on equal footing.
