UN envoy hears concerns about the Sahel region

The UN Special Envoy for the Sahel, Romano Prodi has been meeting with leaders and members of civil society in the Sahel region of Africa, UN Radio reports.
During his three-day visit to Senegal, Mauritania, Burkina Faso and Niger, Mr. Prodi was joined by the UN Secretary-Generals Special Representative for West Africa, Said Djinnit.
Vannina Maestracci, who is travelling with Mr. Prodi says the discussions have been around the challenges that the Sahel is facing and possible ideas for a way forward.
«He really wants to make sure that he is listening to the concerns of all of those who are affected by the challenges in the region. This is part of his ongoing discussions and exchanges he is having on the Sahel region and part of the efforts that is occurring right now to develop a regional strategy for the Sahel,» Vannina admitted.
Mr. Prodi is also participating in the two-day international conference on regional development and security issues which started in Niger’s capital, Niamey on Friday.
