WFP: Humanitarian situation in Sahel region critical
04.05.2012 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
The World Food Programme says it desperately needs funding to address a critical humanitarian situation in the Sahel region of Africa.
According to WFP, drought in the region, which covers eight countries in West Africa, is bringing hunger to millions for the third time in recent years.
The agency says it needs almost $400 million to help more than eight million people across the Sahel.
Newly appointed WFP Executive Director Ertharin Cousin travels to the region over the weekend accompanied by the head of the UNs Refugee Agency, Antonio Guterres.
Elisabeth Byrs is WFP spokesperson in Rome.
«The aim of this mission is to visit the projects the two agencies have in Niger where malnutrition and hunger have reached emergency levels and they will see by themselves whats going on, how serious the situation is. They will also meet some of the tens of thousands of refugees who have fled from fighting in neighbouring Mali.»
