Ukraine to reduce gas consumption by 17% in 2012

23.12.2011 14:11 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) — Ukraine is planning to reduce gas consumption by 8–10 billion cubic meters, or by about 16.7%, in 2012 compared with 2011, to 44–46 billion cubic meters, Ukrainian Energy and Coal Industry Minister Yuriy Boiko has said in an interview with the Uriadovy Kurier newspaper. «The consumption of natural gas by Ukraine was recently 64 billion cubic meters, but this year it fell to 54 billion cubic meters,» Boiko said. The minister said that in the next five years, Ukraine plans to reduce purchases of imported gas by increasing its own production, introducing effective energy-saving technologies and replacing expensive imported gas with domestic coal. He said that the year 2011 was a turning point for the mining companies that are part of Naftogaz of Ukraine. Ukraine produces about 20 billion cubic meters of gas per year. In accordance with a state program, the domestic production of gas is expected to grow to 27 billion cubic meters in 2017.
