Frost Causes Downgrades to Alberta Crops

Continued wet conditions and freezing temperatures are believed to have caused significant quality downgrades to the cereal and canola crops across much of Alberta according to a crop specialist Neil Whatley with the Alberta Agriculture Information Centre.
«Because the grain and oilseed crops in the province were so far behind in development, yields and quality were likely to have been significantly lowered,» Whatley said.
The exception to the rule is the Peace River region of northern Alberta, where the harvest of the various crops had reached 85% complete, he said. In other regions of the province the harvest is seen as being anywhere from 8% to 15% done, which is well behind the average pace for this time of year.
Whatley said various crops were easily two weeks behind in development when the frost hit late last week.
«There were still a lot of green seed counts in canola and the cereal heads were still very soft,» he said. The freezing temperatures were believed to have ranged between — 2 degree Celsius and -10 degrees, depending on the area.
Whatley said that on the morning after the heavy frost, producers took advantage of the cold ground to put harvest machinery on the fields.
«A lot of the activity involved swathing of the crops, since the frost essentially killed the growing season,» he said. Fields of Canola, oats, wheat and barley were swathed while the ground was still firm.
Whatley said producers in the province need a period of warm and dry weather to get the harvest into full swing.
«There is a bit of a window of opportunity weather wise, that will open up later this week, in which producers should make some good harvest progress,» Whatley said.
Disease issues in some cereal crops in Alberta may also cause lighter yields. Scelerotina has been evident in some canola fields in select areas of the province.
Winter wheat and fall rye planting in Alberta is believed to have increased slightly over last year’s level, Whatley said.
