Soybean Crop Starting to Drop Leaves

The condition of the U.S. soybean crop held steady this past week, with the plants now starting to drop leaves.
According to today’s USDA crop progress report, 8% of the nationwide soybean crop was dropping leaves as of Sunday, ahead of last year and average at 3% and 7%, respectively. At 49% and 48% dropping leaves, Mississippi and Louisiana were well out in front in terms of development, although 14% of the Indiana crop was already dropping leaves as of Sunday, versus 2% and 6% for last year and average. Illinois and Iowa were 5% and 3% dropping leaves as of Sunday, both ahead of average.
Like corn, the condition of the soybean crop held steady this past week, holding at 64% good to excellent — 5 points behind last year.
The Illinois crop lost 3 points from the previous week to fall to 59% good to excellent, while Indiana slipped 1 point to 55%. Iowa was steady at 69%. Michigan fell 1 point to 70% good to excellent and Ohio was unchanged at 63%.
September soybeans finished 4 cents lower at US$10.18 and November fell 3 1/2 cents to $10.22 1/2. As with corn, soybean futures got some spillover support from wheat today. Dry conditions in the eastern Corn Belt were also a supportive influence, although weather in the western Corn Belt was viewed as favourable for the crop, putting pressure on the market. Hot weather in the eastern Corn Belt this weekend with no rain in the forecast until Wednesday has helped futures build a weather premium in for the tail end of the growing season. Traders remain concerned that many areas of Indiana and Ohio were too dry recently and any filling soybeans which are not maturing could have seen a negative impact on yield. Hot weather in the southern Midwest along with sudden death syndrome in Iowa are also seen as trouble spots.
