Poland. Bread prices set to rise
30.08.2010 11:17 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
The cost of bread is set to rise as grain and flour prices have rocketed throughout 2010.
Hikes are expected as wheat prices currently hover between 750850 zloty (188213 euro) per tonne, whereas in June that number stood at 50 percent that figure.
The price of flour has also gone up by as much as 80 percent, meaning the cost of a loaf of bread is inevitable, analysts predict.
Hikes are expected by beginning of September, with some bakers having to raise prices by as much as 20 percent.
The move has prompted bakers and mill owners to request a meeting with the agricultural ministry, as grain reserves are low and counteractive measures are yet to be undertaken.
Bad weather has been blamed for poor grain harvests this year: over the course of five months, Poland witnessed three waves of flooding, affecting 14 out of Poland’s 16 regions. (jb)
