U.S. Dry Bean Production Expected Up 21%

A larger planted area and better average yield will lift U.S. dry bean production sharply higher this year.
According to today’s USDA crop production report, this year’s American dry bean crop will amount to 30.7 million cwt (1.39 million tonnes), up 21% from last year.
Dry bean planted area is estimated at 1.78 million acres, up 2% from the June Acreage report and 16% above the previous year. Harvested area is forecast at 1.71 million acres, up 2% from the June report and 17% higher than the previous year.
The average U.S. dry bean yield is forecast at 1,798 lbs/acre, an increase of 65 pounds from 2009.
Production is forecast to be higher than 2009 in 12 of the 18 producing states, with the five largest producing states, North Dakota, Michigan, Nebraska, Minnesota, and Idaho, forecasting higher production than a year ago.
In Michigan, the average dry bean yield is pegged at 1,750 lbs/acre, down 50 lbs from last year, although total production is forecast to increase to 3.85 million cwt from 3.51 million in 2009.
The average North Dakota yield is projected at 1,570 lbs/acre, a 100-lb increase from last year. Total production in the state is estimated at 10.51 million cwt versus 8.526 million last year.
Nationwide planted acreage for Navy beans increased by 28% from a year ago, while Pinto bean planted area increased 12%. Great Northern variety plantings jumped 53% from 2009 and Black bean planted area climbed 41%.
This year’s dry bean crop in Canada is estimated by Agriculture Canada at 254,000 tonnes, up from 212,000 in 2009.
