Brazil - More beef for European Union

Sales of Brazilian beef reached $447 million in May, with shipments totalling 175,000 tonnes a growth of 11 per year on year.
Over the year, exports totalled almost $2 billion.
The may export figures were 38 per cent up on the equivalent month in 2009 with 175,000 tonnes shipped comparfed to 158,000 in May 2009.
Russia was the main buyer of raw beef, with imports of 37,000 tonnes in May and revenues of $92 million.
Next came Iran, with revenues of $69 million and 26,000 tonnes.
The United Kingdom was the main market for manufacturing beef in the month, with $12 million in revenues and 10,000 tonnes in volume.
The Brazilian exportassociation, ABIEC said the recovery of the global economy, the greater demand for beef in the main import markets and the hardship faced by Brazilian competitors contributed to the exports of Brazilian beef.
From January to May, exports in the sector reached $1.9 billion, growth of 24 per cent over the same period last year. In terms of volume, the increase was three per cent, totalling 794,000 tonnes shipped.
