Brazil to resolve U.S. export ban

Brazil is sending a team examine U.S. testing methods for processed meat products, after banning exports to the U.S. last week
The Brazilian government enforced the export ban when a shipment of meat was recalled by the meat packer JBS after U.S. authorities said that it showed traces of a medicine exceeding legal limits.
Director at the Agriculture Ministry’s Department for the Inspection of Animal-Derived Products, Nelmon Costa said they had requested details on the methodology used to test the beef but had found the response they received lacked key details.
«We have a meeting for June 7 and 8 in the U.S. to discuss this,» Costa said. He added that he expected the issue would be resolved at this meeting, with exports resuming soon after.
According to Costa, the American test was originally designed to test for residues in the liver of cattle, before being approved for tests on muscle tissue, but that there were doubts over whether the test had been approved for use on heat-treated, processed meats.
«We want to know if some additive could interfere with the result,» Costa said, adding that even chemicals in condiments could change the tests’ outcome.
On testing the JBS shipment, U.S. authorities detected the presence of Ivermectic, a medicine used to treat intestinal worms. The presence of the medicine was seen to be between 10.3 and 14 parts per billion, over the U.S. limit of 10 parts per billion.
Costa said that he did not expect the ban to have a severe impact on the local meat packers.
«I don’t think it has had a serious impact,» he said. «They will be able to make up for it by sending their shipments later on.»
