France. Wheat Falls in Paris; Rain Eases Concern Dryness to Hurt Crops
01.06.2010 09:39 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Milling wheat fell for a fourth day in five in Paris as rain across northern France alleviated concerns that dry conditions will hurt production, and after Egypt last week picked Russian wheat over European Union grain.
Milling wheat for November delivery traded on NYSE Liffe fell as much as 1.6 percent to 140 euros ($172.27) a metric ton and traded at 140.50 euros a ton at 12:25 p.m. The grain has declined 4.3 percent in five sessions from 146.75 euros a ton on April 24, the highest level this year.
Most parts of France, the EU’s largest wheat grower and exporter, received rain last week and over the weekend, reducing farmers’ concerns that crops would be damaged by a lack of moisture in April and most of May.
«The recent rains have relaxed the atmosphere a little, even if the quantities of rain have been varied,» Paris-based farm adviser Agritel said in a comment on its Website today.
Egypt, the world’s largest wheat buyer, last week agreed to buy 180,000 tons of Russian wheat at $178.50 a ton, shunning supplies from France and the U. S. The price was «close to the French offers but freight costs penalize us for around $5 a ton,» Agritel said.
Rapeseed for August delivery slipped 0.2 percent to 306 euros a ton at 11:30 in Paris.
