Typically, 2.7–3 million tons of red onions are produced in Egypt, and this year is also one of the good years: the total yield exceeds 3 million tons. In the current season, they are also very lucky with the European onion shortage: demand is very strong and prices are high. So that they have something to sell, local farmers can earn an excellent income. «The weather was favorable this year, which is also reflected in the large head sizes. The size between 40 and 90 mm is the most sought after by importers. We were not bitter about the previous weak prices, we increased the onion area, which we did well. Last year’s monthly export of 700 tons was increased to 1,000 tons this year,» says a large-scale Egyptian producer, Mostafa Antar. According to him, the increase in demand for Egyptian onions can be attributed to the climate conditions in Europe.
