UNDP: Green wall of opportunities grows within Sahel

20.08.2019 12:14 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) — As of recent, UNDP (UN Development Programme) has launched an ambitious initiative to plant a range of trees (to be called Great Green Wall) across the Sahel region of Africa , to hold back desertification and combat climate change, UN Radio reports. It is to be admitted, the Sahel region of Africa stretches across the continent from the Atlantic Ocean up to the Red Sea and is located south of the Sahara desert. As to the report, the trees’ planting has already started within Burkina Faso; the trees are to be hoped a line of vegetation which is to help the region people plant more crops and provide a secure source of food, improved health and thousands of new jobs. Besides, it could also help to break a cycle of migration which may force up to 85 million people to leave their homes by 2050. It is to be admitted, the climate change in the impoverished Sahel is already happening one and a half times faster than the global average, and the region is experiencing droughts every two years, rather than the typical 10-year cycle — what makes UN agencies (and, in part., UNDP) build up their humanitarian and development response.
