UN: 10 million Yemenis ‘one step away from famine’

As of this week, while speaking within a regular press briefing at the UN Geneva headquarters, WFP Spokesperson Herve Verhoosel told presently Yemen remains within its fifth year of conflict between pro-Government forces and Houthi rebels, what makes a large share of the country population short of foods, and so the UN World Food Programme (WFP) demands an «unhindered access» to the most desperate areas within the country frontline regions «to prevent the food security situation deteriorating», UN Radio reports.
«Today twenty million Yemenis — some 70% of the population — are food insecure, up 13% boost against last year. Nearly 10 million of them are one step away from famine,» he told.
It is to be admitted, after receiving reports that intensive clashes had erupted within several locations within Hudaydah city, including an attack yesterday on a key supply route from Hudaydah to Sana’a, WFP and other UN agencies made efforts to ensure proper humanitarian support. Hudaydah has been the focus of clashes between Government forces and Houthi opposition fighters. It is a crucial gateway for the entry of aid, desperately needed to save millions of Yemenis from starvation.
«In the next few days WFP will begin distributing foods’ rations to all families in Kushar district,» Herve Verhoosel told, noting that the «epicenter of recent violence within Hajjah governorate» was a mountainous district only 31 miles from the Saudi border.
It is to be admitted, now WFP is making efforts this year to reach 12 million people each month, 50% up against 2018 ( including 8 million people to be aided with foods’ rations; 2.4 million with commodity vouchers and, eventually, 1.6 million with cash assistance).
