Ukrainian 2018 fish catch almost 62,000 tons

As of 2018, Ukrainian fish and aquatic biological resources catch declined to 61,500 tons, down 25% thousand tons, UNIAN says referring to the Ukrainian Fishermen Association report.
«As of 2018, the total catch of fish and other aquatic biological resources by the domestic fishing industry companies was 61,500 tons, incl. fish 58,000 tons (down against 82,000 tons as of 2017),» the report reads.
However, at same time, the Ukrainian 2018 domestic market fish consumption was 400,000 tons.
«Ukrainians have actively started replacing the meat products, which have become expensive for them, with fish. For that, the domestic retail networks have boosted their fish import rates what continues destroying the Ukrainian fishing industry. Thus, as of now, 85% of all fish/fish products sold on Ukrainian domestic market is imported from abroad,» the report reads.
It is to be admitted, since 1989, the Ukrainian fish and aquatic biological resources catch plummeted 18 times from 1.1 million tons (1989) down to 61,500 tons (2018).
As to the earlier report, as of 2017, the Ukrainian fish and aquatic biological resources catch was 94,200 tons.
As reported by UNIAN, according to the State Agency of Fisheries, the total catch of fish and aquatic biological resources in Ukraine in the year 2017 amounted to 94.2 thousand tons.
