Harvesting 2018: agrarians threshed 70% grains/leguminous crops

12.12.2018 21:03 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) — As of recent, within Mauritius, the sugar output has become waste-free: bagasse is burned at local thermal power plants, thus providing the country residents with electricity. Besides, the CO2 emissions are captured, and then added to the sweet drinks. In this way, already 14% of all the Mauritius electricity is produced, Ukrainian National Association of Sugar Producers says referring to the Phys.org. report. It is to be admitted, the island of Mauritius, situated within the Indian Ocean, has always been not rich in natural resources, and thus heavily dependent on expensive imported petroleum products for electricity generation. However, the renewable energy possibilities have helped the island to solve its energy problems. As to the report, now the island government is actively investing into the construction of the solar and wind power plants. However, the island has got one more important renewable energy source — that is, the sugar cane. As to the experts, the biomass received from the sugar cane processing waste gives already 14% of the island total electricity, and it is environmentally friendly. It is to be admitted, the Mauritius yearly sugar cane crop is 900,000 tons. The sugar cane stems are crushed and squeezed into the juice, while the bagasse is sent to thermal power plants, where it is burned at 500° C. As to the report, Mauritius is going to boost the share of the renewable sources up to 35% of its total electricity until 20125.
