UN health agency launches action plan as global malaria cases rise
19.11.2018 19:11 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Targets to reduce global rates of infections and deaths from malaria are not being met, UN Radio says referring to the World Health Organization (WHO) 2018 World malaria report (issued this week).
As to the report, the global malaria infection rates had been declining before 2016; however, the number rose from 217 million to 219 million within 2017. In meanwhile, the targets set by the WHO Global technical strategy for malaria 20162030 call for a drop of the malaria case incidence and death rates of at least 40% by 2020.
While responding to the situation, the WHO and its partners have launched a country-led ‘high burden to high impact’ response plan. The plan launching coincides with the release of the 2018 World malaria report. The plan is aimed at scaling up prevention, treatment and investment to protect vulnerable people, and get reductions in malaria deaths and disease back on track worldwide.
The plan builds on the main principle that no one should die from a disease that can be easily prevented and diagnosed, and that is entirely curable with available treatments.
As to the report, the plan admits the financing needed to tackle the malaria worldwide is in total about US$6.6 milliard annually until 2020.
