WHO: 90% world population breathing in polluted air

Ahead of the first Global Conference on Air Pollution and Health (to be held this year Oct 30-Nov 01 within Geneva), WHO has issued this week an ambient air quality database, showing pollution levels worldwide, UN Radio reports.
The database shows that the pollution levels are «still dangerously high» within most parts of the world.
As to the report, while commenting on the WHO new research, UN experts admitted air pollution claims seven million lives a year. As to UN experts, air pollution problem affects nine out of ten people worldwide.
Thus, World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Gebreyesus, made a call for Member States to take action urgently, warning that air pollution «threatens us all, but the poorest and most marginalized people bear the brunt of the burden».
Besides, Dr Maria Neira, WHO Director of the Department of Public Health, Social and Environmental Determinants of Health, told dangerous air pollution levels are registered within «many of the world megacities». As to her, air quality levels in those urban centres, exceed WHO guidelines «by more than five times».
As to the report, the WHO database covers over 4,300 cities within 108 countries, the data points to an estimated 4.2 million deaths each year caused by outdoor air pollution, with 3.8 million fatalities overall, owing to household pollutants, linked to cooking.
More than 90 per cent of victims come from low- and middle-income countries in Asia and Africa, followed by others in the Eastern Mediterranean region, Europe and the Americas.
However, at same time, Gebreyesus also admitted there is some progress within the pollution fighting.
«The good news is that we are seeing more and more governments increasing commitments to monitor and reduce air pollution as well as more global action from the health sector and other sectors like transport, housing and energy,» he said.
