Semerak: Association Agreement requires prompt introduction of Bird and Habitats Directives within Ukraine

As of this week, while speaking within a press conference at the Ukrainian Crisis Media Center (Kyiv), Ukrainian Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Ostap Semerak has said he is convinced that the implementation of the environmental directives stipulated by the Agreement will have not only positive consequences for the Ukrainian nature protection but will also create economic benefits, Government Portal reports.
As to Semerak, the Association Agreement opens up new opportunities and creates new standards within various spheres of public life, including the environment.
«As to experts, the state of the national legislation at the time of signing the Agreement had a high degree of compliance with the requirements of the Bird Directive, and the average - with the requirements of the Habitats Directive. Today, the task is to eliminate gaps within the Ukrainian legislation and to provide clear mechanisms that will work within the Ukrainian realities,» he admitted.
As to the Minister, the European Union has set a rather ambitious target within the implementation of environmental policy, which must stop the catastrophic changes caused by the loss of biodiversity: thus, in part., by 2050 biodiversity and ecosystem services must be preserved, evaluated and appropriately restored for biodiversity, economic prosperity and human well-being.
Besides, Semerak has also admitted that since the ratification of the Association Agreement, Ukraine has also been actively involved into the achievement of these goals.
