FAO calls for action to support small-scale fisheries
23.08.2017 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Although small-scale fisheries provide two-thirds of all catch for consumption, the sector struggles to compete due to regulatory frameworks which favour large commercial fleets, UN Radio reports referring to the book issued by the FAO (UN Food and Agriculture Organization) this week.
As to the report, the book serves as an initial progress report on implementing voluntary guidelines on sustainable small-scale fisheries ( adopted within 2014), aimed at improving the livelihoods of the more than 100 million people globally who work within the sector.
As to the report, the book includes 30 case studies from across the globe and addresses issues that include gender and sustainable resource use.
In meanwhile, the FAO says that «far from being relics of a bygone age, small-scale fisheries technologies and practices are usually well adapted to the ecological and social circumstances within which they operate».
