Within flood-damaged Sri Lanka, disease spiraling out of control
08.06.2017 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Disease is starting to «spiral out of control» within the flood-hit Sri Lanka, weeks after deadly flooding and landslides hit the country,
UN Radio says referring to the UNICEF (UN Childrens Fund) report.
As to the report, over 684,000 people within 15 provinces were affected by the aftermath of Tropical Storm Mora, which left nearly 300 dead or missing.
In meanwhile, UNICEF country representative Tim Sutton has said that within the southern district of Matara flood waters didn’t recede, raising fears of mosquito-borne disease transmission.
As to Sutton, so far this year there have already been more than 53,000 cases of dengue, which causes severe flu-like symptoms.
It is a leading cause of death among children and adults in Sri Lanka.
As to him, presently within many flood-hit districts the Sri Lankan government had found it difficult to assess the extent of the damage because many civil servants had been caught up in the disaster.
It is to be admitted, to help at least 21,000 people still living in emergency shelters, the UNICEF is calling for US$3.5 million. One of its priorities is to keep vulnerable children safe.
