FAO: African Horn braced for further food shortages
21.12.2016 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
The arrival of the rainy season across the Horn of Africa is unlikely to improve conditions for millions affected by «multiple droughts», UN Radio says referring to the FAO (UN Food and Agriculture Organization) report.
As to the report, within the Horn of Africa, hunger levels are likely to rise and agricultural support for farmers is critical to protect livestock and equip families to plant crops in the coming months.
Reportedly, about 12 million people across Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia are already in need of food assistance, as families struggle to make a living, in the face of rising debt and low seed stocks.
Livestock farmers have been particularly hard hit as food prices have increased while animal prices have fallen.
As to the report, the region farmers need urgent support due to constant harvest failures.
