Ban: Emergency fund "vital tool" to help most vulnerable

As of the last week, while speaking within a meeting at the UN in New York to mark the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the CERF (Central Emergency Response Fund), the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said an emergency fund to respond to humanitarian crises had proved to be a «vital tool» to fulfil the international community’s promise to help the world’s most vulnerable people, UN Radio reports.
It is to be admitted, the CERF was set up to provide fast and predictable funding for humanitarian crises around the world. Within the CERF, resources are not earmarked for specific countries or crises, but can be deployed quickly wherever needs are greatest; for example in earthquake-hit Nepal, drought-affected countries in the Horn of Africa or to help those fleeing the war in Syria.
As to the report, UN chief Ban Ki-moon urged the international community to continue funding operations.
«The heart of the mandate of the CERF is to make sure that no one is left behind. It is a vital tool in fulfilling our global promise to the most vulnerable. To that end, it depends on strong donor support,» he stressed.
As to Ban, over 125 million people globally are expected to need humanitarian assistance in 2016.
And as the number of beneficiaries boosts so does the cost.
Ban admitted financial requirements now are five times greater than a decade ago.
