UN: Governments must be held accountable on ending racial discrimination

24.11.2015 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) — While speaking at the opening session of the UN’s Main Committee on Ending Racial Discrimination yesterday in Geneva (Switzerland), the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein said governments around the world must be held accountable for safeguarding against racial discrimination in times of uncertainty, UN Radio reports. As to the report, Al Hussein said the world is filled with «anxiety» as it hurtles toward what he called the «unknown». Besides, Al Hussein also said the Committee had two fundamental roles to play in holding governments accountable on issues of racial discrimination. «Reaffirm our commitment to the rights which governments themselves must maintain as duty-bearers, and not to stoke the lowest and baseless instincts of human beings to for the sake of narrow political gain,» Al Hussein emphasized. As to the report, the High Commissioner also warned that ethnic nationalism was reviving itself in dangerous ways around the world. He said governments must be careful not stoke resentment against populations or promote «scapegoating» when addressing economic challenges. It is to be reminded, 2015 marks 50 years since the adoption of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.
