UN marks 70 years since its founding

Oct 24 was a special day at the United Nations, as the organization celebrated 70 years since its founding. The festivities kicked off on the last week Fri night at UN headquarters in New York with a special concert featuring several world-renowned musical performers. Other events were taking place in communities, cities and nations around the world, UN Radio reports.
As to the report, in a special message to commemorate 70 years since the founding of the United Nations, the Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called the organization a «beacon for all humanity».
Reportedly, the UN chief said that in such complex and difficult times, the limits of collective international action had become «painfully clear». Yet, he stressed, «no single country or organization can address today’s challenges alone».
Meantime, a number of events took place on the last week Sat as part of the global celebrations.
Thus, the «Enlightened Universe» art exhibition created by renowned artist Cristobal Gabarron was unveiled in Central Park in New York City. The sculpture is to be thereupon displayed in major cities across the globe.
Also, at night, one-by-one some 300 famous landmarks in about 75 countries were bathed in blue lights.
Besides, famous sites such as the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, the Hermitage in Russia and Tokyo’s Sky Tree Tower were also lit in blue as part of the «Turn the World UN Blue» campaign.
