Tsipras: People of Greece have demonstrated "solidarity' with migrants
02.10.2015 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
While speaking at the UN General Assembly yesterday, the Prime Minister of Greece, Alexis Tsipras, said the people of Greece demonstrated their solidarity by providing food and shelter with the migrants who had arrived in their country, UN Radio reports.
As to Tsipras, over 300,000 people, mostly from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan had entered Greece since the beginning of the year.
It is to be admitted, conflict and insecurity in the Middle East and Africa has driven record numbers of people to flee their homes. At the end of 2014 the number of people forcibly displaced around the world had risen to what the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) has called «a staggering 59.5 million», much up against 51.2 million just a year earlier.
So far this year, an additional 500,000 people, the majority of them refugees, have crossed the Mediterranean Sea into Europe.
As to the report, Tsipras said Europe should not stop those people from coming.
«For some, the only way to deal with this challenge is to build walls higher, to repeal migrants by force or to ensure that they remain someone’s else responsibility, as far away as possible. We do not believe that the future of Europe or the future of our world can be built on ever higher walls or children dying at our doorsteps,» he admitted.
Meanwhile, the UN Refugee agency has appealed for an additional US$128 million to manage the crisis in Europe.
