UN: Global development goals need climate change action to succeed

15.09.2015 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) — New global development goals are only likely to succeed if climate change is addressed, UN Radio says referring to the outgoing President of the UN General Assembly Sam Kutesa report. It is to be admitted, Sam Kutesa was speaking on the last day of his presidency of the 69th session of the General Assembly. The finalization of the new global goals for development has been highlighted by the outgoing President of the General Assembly as one of the «major highlights» of the session. Known as the Sustainable Development Goals or SDGs, the 17 targets will guide the international community’s development efforts for the next 15 years. But General Assembly President, Sam Kutesa said that their success is dependent on an agreement on climate change. «Our endeavour to set our world on a sustainable course will be moot if we do not address one of the defining challenges of our time, that is climate change. It will be crucial to reach a bold and ambitious agreement in Paris that promotes the achievement of sustainable development, while protecting our planet,» he said. It is to be reminded, world leaders are due to meet in Paris, France in Dec to agree an international legally-binding deal on climate change.
