Ban: Early efforts to protect human rights can avert catastrophes

Human and political catastrophes can be averted if the UN addresses human rights violations without delaying, UN Radio says quoting the UN Secretary-General
Ban Ki-moon as saying on Mon while sharing his message at the opening of the 28th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva.
It is to be admitted, the Council is an inter-governmental body within the UN system, responsible for strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights around the globe.
Stephanie Coutrix reports.
As to Ban, now the world faces serious violations of human rights, from discrimination and inequality to oppression and violent extremism.
Since 2006, the UN Human Rights Council has been addressing these abuses and making recommendations on them.
Also, Ban Ki-moon said the conflict in Syria offers just one example where early UN efforts to address these violations might have averted a human and political catastrophe.
«The United Nations has the mandates and the tools it needs to act preventively, from capacity building to monitoring and reporting. The biggest challenge to using these tools is the lack of political consensus among Member States,» he stressed.
The UN chief appealed to the 47-member Council to unite behind early and practical steps to support national actors in protecting human rights.
He said this helps strengthen national sovereignty, rather than challenge or restrict it.
