Island nations encouraged to share climate action success stories

03.09.2014 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) — As of now, small island developing states or SIDS are being encouraged to share their experience of successful projects which have mitigated the threat of climate change, UN Radio reports. As to report, many SIDS are particularly susceptible to the negative impacts of climate change, such as rising sea levels and extreme weather conditions. The international community is meeting now on the Pacific Ocean island of Samoa to discuss how to help small island nations to cope with the issue and develop sustainably. Thus, the head of the UN Development Programme, Helen Clark, has visited the village of Luatuanu’u which was hit by a cyclone in 2012. She says the positive response to the devastation could be useful to other countries in a similar situation. «I think it’s important to share their experiences of what has happened in Samoa. We are very much into SIDS, SIDS collaboration and sharing of some things worthwhile here, then villages in other Pacific nations may be interested in learning about it and adapting it for their own purposes,» Mrs. Clark admits. Later this month world leaders will gather at a UN summit in New York, which hopefully will build momentum towards a global agreement on countering climate change. The experience of SIDS is expected to be a major part of the UN summit discussions.
