12.06.2014 09:14 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
The authorities in China have reported four cases of avian influenza among people to the World Health Organization (WHO), UN Radio reports.
The cases of the H7N9 virus were recorded in the provinces of Shandong and Jiangsu. As of now, bird
flu viruses continue to pose a serious threat to human and animal health.
«The WHO says there is the potential for the virus to spread through the movement of live poultry, but that at this time there is no indication that it has spread internationally. It also notes that there has been no evidence of sustained human-to-human transmission, so the risk of ongoing international spread by travellers is considered low,» Stéphane Dujarric, the Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, admits.
In meanwhile, WHO is encouraging countries to continue strengthening influenza surveillance.
It is advising travelers to regions with known outbreaks of avian influenza to avoid poultry farms, or contact with live birds.
