Green economy should help create decent jobs, says Ban Ki-moon

23.05.2012 09:34 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) — World leaders have been urged to take bold action to design education that can provide social protection and create decent jobs, especially for young people. That appeal came from UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon as the General Assembly held a thematic debate on the «Road to Rio+20 and Beyond». The debate was part of meetings that are being held before the UN Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, next month. The Secretary-General said there is a need for what he called «a fundamental re-think» of the current economic model and new tools such as green economy policies and strategies. «Within the context of sustainable development, the green economy should help generate decent jobs, especially for the nearly 80 million young people entering the workforce every year. We can also scale up social protection safety nets. Let me emphasize that social progress and job creation require bold action on education — the basic building block of any society,» admitted Mr. Ban. The Secretary-General said the world is watching, the media are focused and people, young and old, are demanding action.
