3.8 million Somalis will need humanitarian assistance in 2013

As to UN Radio, the United Nations says it will require US$1.3 billion to meet humanitarian needs in Somalia in 2013.
The funds will be spent on a total of 369 humanitarian projects targeting 3.8 million Somali’s in need.
The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) says although the humanitarian situation in Somalia remains critical, the improvement in the food security situation and the new security and political landscape present opportunities to break the cycle of recurring crises brought on by drought and conflicts.
And for the first time, the launch of the appeal took place in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu.
Jens Learke, the OCHA spokesperson in Geneva, says:
«There continues to be immediate urgent humanitarian needs in terms of life saving activities. That is covered by the plan. What is new or an addition is that we are looking also more at programming that is to build up the resilience to future shocks so that hopefully we can get out of this vicious cycle we have seen over the past 20 years with recurrent crisis, conflict drought famine etc. That we are launching it in Mogadishu today is we hope symbolic of the improve security situation and we do believe that we can implement this programme over the coming three years.»
Somalia has one of the most protracted humanitarian crises in the world as a result of decades of civil war and recurrent drought and famine.
More than 1.1 million Somalis are internally displaced and over 1 million others live outside the country as refugees.
