Alternative option of FTA, association deal with EU almost ready

A Ukrainian delegation insists on securing in the Association Agreement a perspective of EU membership. At the same time, the EU offers other wording, Prime Minister Mykola Azarov posted on his Facebook page.
«Today, in Brussels, the expert-level negotiations on the conclusion of the agreement on free trade area and association with EU have completed… Our delegation insists that the Association Agreement with the EU include a prospect of EU membership for Ukraine. The EU offers other wording,» Azarov emphasized. He also added that a compromise agreement is almost ready. «Almost all the contentious issues are removed, and a compromise agreement has been prepared. Only one position has remained in the Association Agreement, which demands either a compromise, or a political decision,» the prime minister wrote. At the same time he emphasized that an Association Agreement is adopted for 10–15 years, and this instrument demands reforms from Ukraine in different industries. «So, in other words, after a certain period of time Ukraine has to meet certain standards adopted in the EU,» the head of government underscored. In this regard, Azarov asks the question: if a country located in the heart of Europe complies with all EU standards, for what reason it is deprived of the European perspective? «These are our arguments. We expect that our partners will understand our position,» Azarov summarized. As reported, the Ukraine — EU Summit at which Kyiv hopes to finalize negotiations on the Association Agreement will take place December 19 in Kyiv.
