Pakistan's food exports rose 8.7% in 2010

Pakistan’s food exports surged 8.7 per cent in the last fiscal year 2009–10 against the same period of the last year, the Federal Bureau of Statistics (FBS) reported on Monday.
Overall food group exports registered at US$3.26 billion in FY10 versus $3.01 billion during the same period last year. In the food group, rice exports contributed around 67 per cent compared with 66 per cent witnessed in FY09. Total rice exports increased by 9.7 per cent to $2.17 billion against $1.98 billion witnessed in same period last year.
Basmati rice exports decreased by 20 per cent to $856 million versus the previous year’s exports of $1.07 billon mainly due to a decline in global rice prices, otherwise rice export quantities increased by 3 per cent during the period. Other rice exports increased by 44.6 per cent to fetch inflow of $1.32 billion versus $912.9 million recorded in FY09. Fruit exports grew by 49.4 per cent to record at $238 million against previous year’s $159.8 million.
Similarly, vegetable exports rose by 64.6 per cent to $120 million, meat exports surged by 41.7 per cent and spices export increased by 26.6 per cent over the corresponding period of last fiscal year. Textile exports which have a market share of 52.9 per cent in the country’s exports, increased by 7 per cent to $10.24 billion in the period under review from $9.57 billion against the same period of previous year.
The improvement in textile exports was mainly attributed to a surge in exports of raw cotton, which increased massively by 124 per cent. Similarly, cotton yarn and towel exports increased by 27.1 per cent and 5.2 per cent respectively, however exports of bed wear decreased by 0.6 per cent.
