Bangladesh import rice from Vietnam

The government has decided to import rice from Vietnam shortly, food minister Abdur Razzaque told journalists on Tuesday.
The decision followed a meeting in the morning between the minister and a visiting Vietnamese delegation led by Cao Thi Ngoc Hoa, vice director general of Vietnam Southern Food Corporation, a government entity.
Razzaque said the price of rice will be between $ 370 and $380 per tonne and the supply will begin by 45 days.
Asked about the kind of rice that will be imported, the minister said it would be basically unboiled (atap) rice as Vietnam does not export boiled rice.
«So we will not import much rice from Vietnam. It will be between 50,000 to 1 lakh tonnes.»
Bangladesh has been importing rice from India to increase its emergency food stock. Recently, India agreed to sell three lakh tonnes instead of one lakh tonnes previously agreed.
The minister also said that India also wanted to sell wheat to Bangladesh.
«The import of around 2 lakh tonnes of rice is underway. Of which, 50,000 tonnes have already reached the country. The remaining amount will also come soon.»
The food minister said that the demand of rice will be met if it can import a total of 5 lakh tonnes of rice by this year.
«The government will use wheat for its different purposes including social safety programmes. Wheat is also our second important staple food.»
