Canada - Drop in wheat production

12.07.2010 13:55 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) — Canadian grain farmers face an uncertain harvest Canada — Drop in wheat production as heavy and continuous rains across the provinces of Manitoba and Saskatchewan left a trail of devastation across these highly intensive cropping areas. Wheat planting is back by more than 18%, Chris Gillen of the Canadian Wheat Board told an Irish Tillage and Land Use Society tour in the country last week. He also said that Canada was likely to have its smallest wheat harvest since 1971. An estimated 10 million acres, or more, of the country’s 80 million acres of tillage was not planted due to the incessant wet and the fear is that many more acres will be drowned out post planting. Floods and patches of water were evident across many of these provinces. Fields showed severe colour irregularity, as both fertilizer loss and micro nutrient deficiency were widespread. Planting still continued this week in Alberta, with crops being sown for silage. Alberta escaped the worst of the ravages of the recent rain and crops in that province look quite good but are late planted. The wet has also prevented access to early sown crops for spraying with herbicides and this have a further adverse effect on yields.
