Pakistan and US agree to modernise agriculture sector

Pakistan and United States on Tuesday agreed to continue working together to modernise Pakistan’s agriculture to ensure food security; foster economic growth; alleviate poverty and enhance rural employment. Delegates from both the sides agreed during the 3rd meeting of the Strategic Dialogue on Agriculture under the Pak-US Strategic Dialogue framework held here.
Pakistani delegation was led by Secretary, Ministry of Food and Agriculture Junaid Iqbal, who was assisted by Malik Zahoor Ahmad, Chief Co-ordinator of the Strategic Dialogue Secretariat. The US delegation was jointly led by Ms Darci Vetter, Deputy Under Secretary for Farm and Foreign Agricultural Services, US Department of Agriculture and James Bever, Assistant Administrator of USAID.
It was decided that the US would provide assistance to Pakistan to enhance crop productivity, especially wheat and cotton, eradicate animal and plant diseases; development dairy and horticulture. The US will provide market access to Pakistani agricultural products and help in water management.
During the deliberations it was agreed to strengthen collaborative research and to broaden private sector support for economic growth in the agriculture sector. US delegation assured Pakistani delegation that it would continue supporting Pakistan’s agriculture sector to enable Pakistan to meet the challenges of food security.
Giving the details of the deliberations Secretary Minfa, Junaid Iqbal said that the previous meeting of the Agriculture Track was held in Washington on March 2010. The agriculture was added as a separate track in the 2nd round of Strategic Dialogue in 2007, since then, two meetings of the track have been held so far.
