Trelay Forms Partnership with Local Fire Department to Prevent Grain Bin Deaths

Earlier this year, the Warren, Ill., Volunteer Fire Department was presented with a request from a local farmer to purchase a grain rescue tube. As the cost was outside the department’s budget, the volunteer squad began a letter campaign to raise the $4,000 needed to make the purchase.
Jason Biddick, Trelay Seeds Lead, received the request in late February from Bob Rose and Kelly Lobdell, two of Trelay Seeds’ District Sales Managers who serve customers in the area.
«Safety is an important word in our company,» Biddick remarked. «If we can save even one life in our community by equipping our local fire department, we want to be part of that.»
Trelay Seeds joined three other donors to complete the financing needed to purchase the grain rescue tube, which will be available to rescue workers this month.
Each year, grain storage entrapments cause death and injury to our nation’s farmers. In the last 30 years, more than 200 U.S. farm family members have died from grain suffocation. While safety regulations have succeeded in bringing down the number of fatalities, many factors have influenced an alarming upward trend in entrapments.
A grain rescue tube is comprised of four vertical interlocking units that form a cylinder which is driven section by section into the grain surrounding the entrapped victim to allow the grain to be removed so the victim can be safely extricated.
«We want to be part of making the communities in which we live and work safer and more prosperous,» Rose said. «I have farmer customers serving as volunteers in Warren. My genuine partnership with those customers goes beyond seed sales.»
Regional Brands Marketing Manager Jeremy Kelly agrees, «Anything we can do to make farmers’ lives safer is a win-win. We are 100 percent behind regional seed company efforts like this.»
