Ukrainian small gardeners have to leave their apples unharvested
15.10.2018 23:47 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
As of now, Ukrainian small-scale apple-growing farm economies have to leave their apple crops unharvested within their orchards as apple-growing is unprofitable Ukrinform the Agrobusiness website report.
«Taking into account the expenditures for the orchard care within apple-trees’ growing season, the apples’ output, at the moment of the apples being sold for processing, is unprofitable,» the report reads.
So, now many small-scale (15 ha) apple-growing farm economies, who are growing their apples within the so-called semi-intensive gardens, admit they have stopped harvesting the dessert apples’ late varieties. They motivated their refusal to pick up the apples with the reason of having no refrigerators to store the apples for the period until the high season comes. The farm economies say it is not profitable for them to sell their apples for processing right away (as the processors do not pay much enough), but, at same time, they can’t afford themselves keeping the unsold apples at their warehouses as long as necessary.
