Taxing sugary drinks “could save lives and fight obesity”
12.10.2016 10:14 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Growing the cost of sugary drinks and taxing them more could have massive health benefits for millions of people, UN Radio says referring to the WHO
(UN World Health Organization) yesterday report.
It is to be admitted, while announcing the recommendation on World Obesity Day (marked annually Oct 11), the WHO report shows how price boost can go hand-in-hand with a drop in consumption.
Latest figures show that more than half a milliard adults worldwide are obese, while well over 400 million people suffer from diabetes.
As to the report, a single can of your favourite fizzy drink can contain up to 10 teaspoons of sugar.
Reportedly, now the United States is the biggest global consumer of sugary beverages, but the problem is spreading to Latin America, China and sub-Saharan Africa.
So, the report says the healthiest course of action would be to cut out sugary drinks altogether, or at least cut down consumption to just one glass a day.
Besides, the UN health agency also wants governments to tax the drinks more heavily, as theres growing evidence that a 20% boost in price leads to a 20% drop in consumption.
