Ten years after Asia tsunami, Aceh "builds back better"
26.12.2014 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Ten years after a tsunami which claimed around 200,000 lives across Asia, one of the worst affected regions has in the words of the UN «built back better», UN Radio reports.
As to the report, the province Aceh in Indonesia, bore the brunt of the massive tidal wave that swept across Asian waters as far as East Africa on 26 December 2004.
It is thought that 170,000 died in Aceh.
Since that, the UN Development Program, UNDP, has been at the forefront of the reconstruction and rehabilitation effort in the province.
It has supported disaster risk reduction plans including the creation of a tsunami early warning system and the establishment of provincial and district disaster agencies.
In meanwhile, UNDP representatives say the international community has helped to rebuild a stronger Aceh, one which is more resilient to disasters, but also one with a stronger provincial government.
