10,000 new cases per week of Ebola predicted by UN

14.10.2014 09:51 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) — Ten thousand new cases per week of the deadly Ebola virus are being predicted by the World Health Organization (WHO), NRCU reports. As to report, close to 4500 people have died from the disease in West Africa, mainly in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. WHO has also confirmed that the death rate of people who contract the disease has risen to 70 per cent from a previous estimate of 50 per cent. Bruce Aylward is the WHO Assistant Director-General of Emergencies. «We anticipate the number of cases occurring per week by that time will be somewhat between five and ten thousand a week. And the goal now is taking all the different pieces of the response that are planned, everything from the Ebola treatment centres to the people deployments to the community engagements and try to make sure we’ve got that capacity in place so we can ensure 70 per cent of cases can be properly managed or isolated and 70 per cent of burials can be done safely by then,» Bruce Aylward, the WHO Assistant Director-General of Emergencies, says. Meanwhile, the UN has confirmed that a medical officer attached to the UN Mission in Liberia, UNMIL, has died from Ebola while being treated in a hospital in Germany. He’s the second member of UNMIL staff to be killed by the virus.
