UN: World business leaders gather in Samoa to support small island developing states

Major businesses from around the world are gathering on the Pacific island of Samoa to discuss how best to support the development of small island developing states, UN Radio reports.
It is to be admitted, the countries which are collectively known as SIDS (Small Island Developing States), have many similar characteristics, their size, remoteness, lack of resources, poor infrastructure and susceptibility to climate change and natural disasters.
As to report, the private sector is meeting ahead of the third United Nations global conference on SIDS which gets underway on 1st September.
Gyan Chandra Acharya, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Small Island Developing States, says the private sector has an important role to play.
«If you look at their particular economic challenges; they have a very small population; they are far away from the major markets; the cost of fuel is very high and the impact of climate change are really devastating for them. So we believe there has to be a multi-stakeholder approach to the solution of the problem. The government has to play an important role, the private sector has to play its role and the civil society has to play an important role,» Mr. Acharya admits.
It is to be admitted, the UN has designated as SIDS over 50 nations and territories largely in the Pacific and Caribbean but also in the Indian Ocean.
The conference will focus on ways the international community can contribute to the sustainable development on the islands.
