World's most neglected regions to receive $75 million in emergency aid

24.07.2014 09:14 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) — Two of the world’s most neglected regions with high levels of malnutrition and food insecurity are expected to receive $75 million in humanitarian relief aid from the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF), NRCU reports. As to the report, the allocation will go to 11 countries in the West African Sahel and the Horn of Africa where critical aid operations are facing funding deficits. It’s the second of two annual rounds of allocations from the CERF Underfunded Emergencies window, designed to ensure relief work continues in countries where needs are high but financial support is low. CERF Chief Lisa Doughten warns that although the plight of the people in the designated regions is no longer front page news, it does not mean that their needs are any less urgent. CERF is a global humanitarian fund which pools contributions from governments, foundations, the private sector, and individuals for immediate use in times of crisis such as natural disasters and armed conflict. The money is used by organisations such as the World Food Programme, UNICEF or the UN Refugee Agency. Since it’s inception in 2006, CERF has given 3.6 billion to crises around the world of which 1.2 billion dollars has been given to forgotten or neglected crises.
