NBU intends to combat corruption in banking sector

The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) plans to fight corruption in the banking sector, in particular, in the issue of distributing refinancing resources, NRCU reports.
«We won’t have ’dear friends,’ including in the banking system,» NBU Governor Stepan Kubiv promised at the 10th annual investment conference organized by Dragon Capital in Kyiv on Wednesday, April 2. When Viktor Yuschenko was the Ukrainian President, the notion of «dear friends» meant a group of businessmen close to the head of state and suspected of corruption. In addition, Kubiv said that the top-priority tasks of the NBU are the switch to targeting inflation and restoring the trust of depositors.
«We have a difficult situation: We want to stop the outflow of deposits, as today there is no trust in the banks,» he said, again confirming the NBU’s policy not to spend currency reserves to stabilize the hryvnia exchange rate: the exchange rate should stabilize thanks to natural mechanisms.
As earlier reported, the NBU plans to finish stress tests of banks by July 2014. Commenting on the situation in Crimea, Kubiv said that the NBU commission which supervises the stocktaking and drawing up of principles to settle problems at the legal level due to the situation appeared due to the Russian occupation has been created. «We should balance assets and liabilities. If there is no the balance of assets and liabilities, someone loses. There should be honest rules,» he said. Kubiv admitted that discussion with representatives of Russian banks on settling problems in Crimea on the financial and economic basis is underway. He did not disclose any other details on the issue.
