WHO steps up efforts to contain Ebola outbreak in Guinea

Eighty people have died so far from the Ebola virus in Guinea, UN Radio says referring to the World Health Organization’s report.
WHO is stepping up efforts with public health authorities and NGO partners to try to contain the Ebola outbreak in Guinea.
Now WHO is distributing protection material in health facilities in Guinea and training health workers in an effort to halt the spread of the Ebola virus in the country. Eleven health workers in Guinea have contracted the disease.
Eighty of the 122 people infected with the haemorrhagic fever in Guinea died up to yesterday.
Four of the seven cases confirmed in Liberia resulted in deaths, but the suspected cases in Sierra Leone have not been confirmed.
Ebola is spread through intimate contact with blood or bodily fluids of infected people. Symptoms include fever, weakness, muscle pain diarrhoea and vomiting. 90 per cent of victims die.
With no treatment or vaccine available, prevention is essential.
WHO spokesman Gregory Hartl told journalists in Geneva Tuesday, the current outbreak was serious, but still relatively small.
«The priorities are stopping chains of transmission and that part of that is tracing all current contacts to make sure that they are followed up for 21 days and also that they don’t inadvertently infect someone else. This is serious. What I am emphasizing is that the epidemiology of this outbreak is the same as with previous outbreaks,» Mr. Hartl stressed.
By now WHO does not recommend trade or travel restrictions.
