UN: Gaps in millennium goals discussed by women

10.03.2014 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) — The challenges of implementing the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) for women and girls are set to be discussed by the Commission on the Status of Women at the UN on Monday, UN Radio reports. The two-week session will examine the achievements but also the gaps in fulfilling the MDGs. The internationally agreed blue-print for global development, set in the year 2000 with a target date of 2015, played an important role in focusing attention on and galvanizing resources for gender equality and women’s empowerment. The UN says that important gains have been made. It says girls’ access to primary education has increased, but overall advancement for women and girls has been uneven and fallen short of expectations. The 58th Session of the Commission is also being seen as an important milestone in the ongoing debate on the Sustainable Development Goals which will replace the MDGs.
