FAO: Millions still undernourished despite decline in hunger globally

Although the number of hungry people worldwide has decreased, millions are still undernourished, according to a report released on Tuesday by three United Nations agencies, UN Radio says.
It finds that over the past two years, more than 840 million people-roughly one in eight-suffered from chronic hunger, meaning they are not getting enough food to lead active and healthy lives.
This number is down from the nearly 870 million figure for the 2010 to 2012 period.
Piero Conforti is an economist with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), which produced the report together with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the World Food Programme (WFP).
«We know that economic growth, economic opportunities, the growth of productivity especially in agriculture, are all changes that can promote the reduction. However, we have also to take into account that economic growth, per se, is not enough. This can only come if governments working together with other stakeholders in the society mainstream food security. But we all have to attach a lot of importance to the issue,» Mr. Conforti says.
FAO recommends countries should implement policies which target the poor, particularly in rural areas, and which also foster social protection and promote a good investment climate.
