Meat producers summoning authorities to be more active in anticontraband struggle

Today a number of leading Ukrainian meat producing companies have addressed an open letter to Ukrainian President, Prime Minister and Verkhovna Rada Speaker asking to commission State Customs Service, Ukrainian Security Service and Internal Affairs Ministry to adopt due measures against meat/meat products Ukrainian territory contraband bringing, reported a number of companies/organizations managers on today Kyiv press-conference.
As to them, present country all kinds meat production situation is critical, mainly due to domestic market being unsaturated with so called «gray» (contraband) meat.
Serghiy Malashenko, OJSC Myronivskiy Khliboprodukt (brand Nasha Riaba) Marketing Department Director, declared thousand tons of low quality poultry meat are being brought into Ukraine every day, with corresponding State organs remaining idle.
Malashenko said this situation endangers domestic/foreign investments as well as entire meat production industry.
A number of other meat producers representatives made it known poultry meat production is meat processing industry most profitable segment, while beef/pork production segment situation is much more complicated, due to «gray» beef/pork is being brought into Ukraine at prices 30–40% down as of Ukrainian producers prices resulting in beef/pork production having become loss-making.
Yuriy Zabela, Agrarian Company Kyivska Director, said presently meat processors offer UAH7/kg live weight purchase price, while industry minimal profitableness maintaining purchase price should be not less UAH14/kg.
Zabela declared this situation can bring to cattle/pigs number sharp shortening.
As to meat producers approximate calculations, only within this year 8 months not less 100.000t meat have been brought into Ukraine up to «gray» schemes, resulting in UAH250 million State losses.
